- Use the colored coordinate thingy in the upper right corner, or
- Use the pie menu (

on a German keyboard), or - Use the number pad, or
- Use alt and middle mouse drag
- X-Ray mode: Upper right or Alt-Z
- Duplicate Shift-D (Esc to cancel movement)
- Turn selected part into own object p (like partition (not penguin!)
- Clip Start: in Properties Sidebar (right) → View (top part)

Other observations:
- Blender uses Alt for a lot of stuff, and my window manager does, too. so the window manager gets into the way.
